Sausage tree fruit (Kigelia africana), Katavi National Park, Tanzania
The massive fruit of the kigeli-keia—the tree’s Bantu name—weighs up to twenty-two pounds and is suspended on long ropy stems. It is a favorite of many animals; baboons, elephants, giraffes, and others eat the fruit, while parrots eat the seeds.
