When brown bears emerge from their long, winter hibercation, berries are not yet ripe and salmon haven't reached the rivers, so the bears feed on razor clams at low tide and feast on nutrient-rich sedges and grasses. Such vegetation flourishes in the tidal margins of Katmai National Park on the Alaskan Peninsula.
