Mount St. Helens started to vent steam after it experienced a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on March 20, 1980. This was taken in April, when the north side of the mountain started to bulge. A second earthquake of magnitude 5.1 triggered the massive collapse of the north face of the mountain on May 18, 1980.
