The shoulder hump that characterizes the bison consists of muscles attached to projections from the backbone. These extra muscles are needed to power the beast's massive head. The male's prominent beard adds to the overall impression of size during dominance displays, while the thick matted hair of the head in both sexes helps absorb the impact of blows during battles between herd members.
