A large group of whooper swans crowd around me on Lake Hokkaido's shore. Traditionally, the people of Hokkaido disperse grain during winter to augment the whooper swans' diet. As a result, these reclusive birds, which nest in the tundra of Eastern Europe, have lost all fear of humans. The loud, aggressive swans pecked at me, apparently expecting a reward for posing. With a 16-35 mm wide-angle perspective, I was able to emphasize the swans while including the austere Hokkaido Mountains in winter.
