In the high Himalaya, there is a long held Buddhist tradition of placing flags inscribed with prayers in locations where strong winds occur. As the flags are battered and frayed by the winds, the fabric disintegrates, scattering the prayers to the heavens. In Bhutan, white prayer flags are frequently affixed to a mini forest of bamboo poles erected atop ridge crests.
