Vertically camouflaged by the shape and color of the surrounding vegetation, a giraffe literally disappears in plain sight, illustrating the power of obliterative coloration to conceal an animal of any size. Each giraffe has its own unique markings made up of dark reddish to chestnut brown blotches of various shapes and sizes on a buff background. These patterns help them blend into a habitat of tree-dotted grasslands in South Africa's Transvaal.
